A very important dialogue on religion and politics will be held on May 22, 2007,
at 8 p.m., at UCLA's Royce Hall. Few recent authors have had their finger more on the pulse
of the dangers of religious extremism than Sam Harris or Chris
Hedges. From its beginning, People For The American Way has been advocating for
the appropriate role of religion in the public square. This
debate will explore the role of religion in society at a deeper
level, as noted atheist Sam Harris and Harvard Divinity School
graduate Chris Hedges air their disagreement on whether faith
can be salvaged given the violence religion has foisted upon the
oppressed throughout history. This ought to be a stimulating
evening filled with challenging insights and new perspectives
that can help us all sharpen activism on religious freedom,
civil liberties and social justice. The debate will be moderated by noted syndicated columnist
Robert Scheer.
