On Oct. 5, 2008, Fr. Geoffrey Farrow (pastor of St. Paul Newman Center, which serves primarily
students at Cal State Fresno, in Fresno) gave a sermon opposing Prop 8. In announcing that
he would vote against Prop 8, he stated that the Church's public support of Prop 8 left him no
choice but to speak out against it, because failure to do so would make him "an accomplice to
a moral evil that strips gay and lesbian people not only of their civil rights but of their
human dignity as well." His bishop quickly retaliated, stripping him of his post and his
employment benefits
and ordering him to avoid all church communities that he had served and to cease using the
internet to "continue your conflict with the Church's teaching." On Oct. 14, 2008, a press
conference was convened at Dignity Center in Los Angeles, where he answered numerous
questions from the press, during the gathering and in individual sessions after it; and
that evening he also appeared on Telemundo's News at 11 p.m., which included video tape
from the news conference at Dignity Center.
